You're on Information Overload (& it's killing your business)
"The internet doesn't exist for the time being."
^ What you need to say the next time you catch yourself researching whether you should run Facebook ads to a course you haven't even created yet.
It's also what one of my favorite YouTubers, Makari Espe (who I wrote about in my book!), said in her latest video documenting her 30-day journey to learn how to play golf.
Her golf experiment came with a big lesson on info and how it's keeping us from getting better in our businesses.
For 1 month, she practiced at the driving range, played a weekly 9-hole game with her friends, and took private lessons with a local teaching pro, Kelli.
As she started her golf journey, she also got targeted with lots of social media content full of swing tips, club "musts," and reels of golfers teaching complicated shots beyond her current skill level.
"I don't understand [all the tips I'm seeing], but then I try to implement all these tips and get overwhelmed," Makari says in her video.
If you've ever played golf, you know just trying to swing a club without slamming it into the ground is hard enough.
So what was wrong with Makari starting to see all those social posts about golf tips?
It's what leads to information overload -- and often what causes beginners to quit before they ever start.
As someone learning how to hold a club and position her feet -- Makari didn't need "the best bunker shot" tips.
She hadn't even mastered all the tips she got from Kelli yet.
That's when Makari declared "the internet didn't exist for the time being" and stopped consuming so much outside info.
🏌️She put her head down (literally lol) and got swinging.
So what the heck does Makari's 30-day golf challenge have to do with how you build your business?
You're facing the same problem Makari did when she started playing golf:
You are information wealthy.
You're more stuffed with information than a turkey on Thanksgiving... yet you keep going back for seconds.
In this case, your wealth is hurting you.
The amount of info you have access to isn't help you grow your business -- it's more like a weighted, rusty anchor dragging along the sand on the sea floor keeping you from actually making progress.
It's not that the info you're consuming isn't good, but much of it is beyond what you need right now.
The key to moving forward in any area in your business is to get just enough info for what you need now, implement it, and move forward.
(I interviewed Pat Flynn on my podcast, On Your Terms®️, last week all about this topic! Our episode airs June 9).
And just like Makari, one of the best ways to debloat from information overload is to find someone you trust, take their advice/info, and stop searching around for more.
Could you imagine if Makari took lessons from 10 different golf pros? Her brain would be bouncing harder than the ball she ricocheted off the driving range divider.
And while it's helpful to be inspired by those ahead of you, it's also important to recognize where you are, embrace being a beginner (even though as I say in my book, being a beginner sucks), and learn through doing.
Find someone you trust, admire, and respect their business values.
Tackle tasks in your business for where you are and where you're headed in the next few months to 1 year.
You'll see bigger results, faster.
If you've been spinning your wheels getting your legal stuff in order (and I'm someone you trust), you've found your legal person.
Stop searching for more & more info "just to make sure." If you've followed my steps, you've got what you need to get started.
Stop googling "is a corporation better than an LLC?" when you haven't even started your business yet. Start with what's 'good for now' and 'upgrade' as you go.
Stop asking ChatGPT what your "liability holes" are when you haven't even created a product yet. Get your basics covered and cross those bridges when you get there.
So in summary:
🌠 Recognize where you're at on your business journey and what information is applicable to what you need to do right now.
🧠 Implement what you've learned and know already.
🔨 Put what you've learned into practice long enough to see if it actually works.
🤝 If you find people you trust, stop searching to see what else you're missing.
📁 Create a "I'll get to this later" folder and save content to come back to. I'd be happy to bet you'll never even open it.
Let's pretend "the internet doesn't exist for the time being," work on our foundation, and swing, baby, swing (aka, practice!).
