I Never Thought This Would Be My Story

​

"I have no idea whether my business is going to work out or where the heck I'm headed."

​

^ Raise your hand if you've had this thought already today.

​

(Woah! I think I just felt the flutter of 48k+ hands flying up in the air!)

​

Whether you're just starting out or taking your business to the next level, it's really hard to have faith that this whole business thing is going to work out.

​

Even as someone with an established business, I have so many days where I'm like, "I know where I want to go, but I have no idea how to get there, or if I even can..."

​

This was never more true than 3 years ago when I sat in the crowd at the best creator conference (Kit's Craft + Commerce) and thought,

​

"I want to be on that stage so badly, but I have no idea how I'd ever get chosen for it."

​

I imagined getting to proudly don the "SPEAKER" badge, clinking champagne glasses at the speaker dinner with my online biz idols, and having my mind blown at the rumored secret speakers-only mastermind*.

​

Back then, my big dream was to teach a workshop about legal stuff.

​

Getting to give a keynote?! 🤌 Fuhgeddaboudit! That was for people who really had something incredible to say!

​

I thought I had a higher chance of visiting mars.

​

But just 2 weeks ago, I had the incredible privilege of giving a keynote (!!) and teaching a workshop at Craft + Commerce...

​

and neither one had anything to do with legal stuff! (Let's face it - that was more fun for me AND the audience 😂)

​

I got to speak on the same stage as Tori Dunlap, Nisha Vora, Les Alfred, Liz Wilcox, Pat Flynn, Chris Donnelly, and so many more incredible entrepreneurs.

​

I could've written to you about "how to go from nervous attendee to being a keynote speaker at the best conference" or even "if you don't believe in yourself now, that's ok - neither did I!"

​

But that's not the moral of this story.

​

I know what it's like to feel like you're galaxies away from where you want to be.

​

I also know what it's like to wander the galaxy, not knowing which planet you belong to (lol).

​

I want to give you permission to trust the process.

​

To let go of the idea that you need an exact plan, a roadmap. Just take one (digital) step at a time.

​

I know it's uncomfortable. Welcome to entrepreneurship.

​

You might not feel it now, but you're getting closer to something bigger.

​

You don't need to know the exact destination, or even the route to get there.

​

There's no Google Maps for online business.

​

Stop asking Siri to "take me to 'success'" and just drive.

​

As I told a good friend yesterday who's on the verge of creating an entirely new-to-her type of business after she said, "I feel like I just have to go and do this..."

​

Whatever "this" is that you're building right now -- it might end up looking different. You might divert along the way. It might lead to something different, something better.

​

I couldn't recreate the steps I took from attendee --> keynote speaker if I tried.

​

Some of my steps "worked" and some felt like I was the car in the inside lane of a busy roundabout.

​

Here's to trusting the process, honoring what you really want, and a little bit of tossing your hands up in the air and saying, "here goes nothin'!"

​
