When Should You Go For It?
"Why are you even here?"
^ What my law firm co-workers used to ask me when they saw how I lit up talking about the fresh fettuccine I'd just made.
As soon as I became an attorney, I knew it wasn't my thing.
Over the next 5+ years practicing law, my colleagues associated me more with what I ate than what motion I wrote that week.
It 'only' took me 5 years, a lot of saving, and careful planning, but I decided to stop being the girl known for cooking and start becoming the one who did it for a living.
I walked out of the firm for the last time on a sweltering Friday afternoon in August 2016. As I chewed on my bottom lip and tugged at the collar of my striped Banana Republic button up, I wondered, "Will my new business actually work?"
All I could see for myself and my life was leaving that law firm to become a health coach. I didn't have any other goals in mind, because I didn't even know what was possible.
The idea of leaving behind the "stability" of my corporate career was scary enough. I figured that if my health coach business didn't work, I'd slump back to the law firm in a few months, embarrassed and ashamed.
Turns out, my health coaching business wasn't a success nor was it my thing.
"Wasn't this supposed to be my one big move?" I thought.
After taking the leap to the leave the law, the idea of taking more leaps felt doable.
I followed the idea to start a legal templates business for online business owners, and 8 years later, I'm so glad I went for it.
I'll never tell you to quit your 9-5 and "go for it" because everything will work out perfectly if you do. That's not the moral of my story.
But if you're worried to go after what you want because you can't perfectly envision what it will all look like in the end --
You should still go for it.
You're about to embark on a process that -- if you're open to it -- could lead to something bigger than what you can imagine for yourself right now.
When I left the law firm, I never could have imagined building the business I have today.
Yes, if I hadn't taken the initial leap to leave the firm, I wouldn't be here.
But the bigger leap -- and the thing that lead to my ultimate 'success' -- is having been open to the possibility of more.
It was only because I was willing to go for it -- to say "yes" to something bigger than my miserable, corporate life -- that I'm here.
You deserve to make the thing that all your co-workers ask you about your reality.
Maybe that will end up being "your thing."
Or maybe it will lead to it.
So if you needed a nudge today to go after what you really deserve, consider this your permission slip to dream bigger, want better, and create your own reality.
