Ready for a Fall (digital) Clean-up?
✏️ It feels like no matter how old you are, or how long you've been out of school, the entire world runs on a school schedule.
I'm not mad about it.
I still routinely call weeknights 'school nights' and operate on a Monday to Friday schedule, despite the fact that I've built a business where I can do whatever, whenever.
Maybe it's because my husband, Ryan, is a university professor.
Our house is filled with language about when classes start, grading papers, and what the 'kids' are wearing these days (oversized t-shirts paired with flouncy, pastel athletic shorts).
When Ryan went 'back to school' this week, I dreamt of taking my 'classroom list' to Staples to buy Trapper Keepers, Lisa Frank folders, and gel pens -- but I realize it's not 1997 and the 'kids' probably use iPads they got same-day delivered from Amazon :(
Channeling this back-to-school vibe, I did a major digital 'back to business' fall cleanup, instead.
🤓 My cleanup goals were:
- CLEANING. Everything needed a good wipe.
- ORGANIZING. I'm talking clean desktops, folders -- you name it.
- SAFETY. As a business owner, you have to prioritize digital security for yourself and your customers' safety (you have access to a lot of their info!).
Want to do a digital cleanup together?
Let's grab our Trapper Keepers laptops and hop in!
🦺 SAFETY (first)
MALWARE // I ran Clean My Mac, an app that scans your computer for malware, but also for large files, duplicate downloads, and other digital junk that clogs up your computer's performance.
SOFTWARE // I updated the software on my iMac (desktop), MacBook (laptop), iPad, and iPhone. Keeping your software up-to-date is really important for performance + security.
PASSWORDS // I changed my passwords for banking and the major apps I use for my business. Remember to update your passwords in your password app. (I'm not going to share what I updated or which app I use, for obvious reasons.)
CONTRACTS/POLICIES // A different kind of safety, but equally important -- I updated my contracts & website policies to bring them up-to-date.
🔥 Hot tip: update the language in your contracts to reflect any issues or uncertainties you've run into with clients lately. If people keep pushing your payment terms, now's a good time to revise that section.
I offer any contract or website policy you need in my legal template shop here→. In terms of 'legal' safety, I've got you covered.
🗂️ ORGANIZING
ASANA // We use Asana to manage all of our projects and tasks in the business, and you can imagine with a business like mine, it gets bloated faster than I do after a night at the Olive Garden.
I scrubbed my Asana, as well as Google Drive, since that's where I keep all of my docs/files.
PHONE // I have more photos on my phone than any other human I know (most of them are of Hudson, my pup). To organize them, I use an app called CleanMyPhone (by MacPaw).
I upgraded to the paid version the first time I used the app to do a MAJOR clean, but ever since then I've used the free version.
It scans your phone to find duplicates, screenshots, and large files. It's super easy to look through what it finds, check or uncheck it to delete, and with the click of ONE button... clean it up!

🧼 CLEANING
DESKTOP // I trashed the zillions of screenshots, unused files, and created a super-handy "BRANDING ASSETS" folder on my desktop full with my logo, branding colors, and fonts for easy access.
WIPE // I wiped down my desk, laptop, desktop, phone screen, AirPods, and iPad with this awesome cleaner kit. If you use AirPods, I love this cleaner kit, too. [affiliate links]
INBOX // My inbox is embarrassingly out of control. I unsubscribed from emails I didn't even sign up for (the irony!) and others that don't bring me joy. Then, I searched my inbox for the name of their company (ie, "THE GAP") and swiftly deleted thousands of old emails in 1 click.
Woo! That was a big clean, huh?
